An interview with Sullivan Idrolle, R&D Software Developer

Sullivan Idrolle came to Flexspring four years ago as an intern. Five months later, he became a full-time technical consultant. After a productive year, “Sully,” as his co-workers affectionately call him, had his eye on broader horizons and new challenges. Team leaders welcomed his initiative.

Q & A

What first attracted you to Flexspring?

I started at Flexspring as an intern four years ago. I liked that it was a small company with huge potential. It seemed challenging and that encouraged me to apply.

Today, among other benefits, Flexspring offers 100% remote working from home and flexible hours. Are those important to you?

Four years ago we were working in the office with the ability to work remotely if we wanted, but I was just 30 minutes from the office. That and the flexibility in hours was a huge benefit because I could manage my time better.

What do you like most about your job as a software developer?

I was an intern for five months, and then I was hired right after that as a technical consultant in the delivery team. A year later I asked to move to the R&D team as a software developer, and it was a really smooth transition. They encouraged me and gave me everything I needed to succeed. It's been a challenge because every day is different, but challenges are what I love the most. That encourages you to make yourself better, to improve your skills.

Describe your typical day at Flexspring.

I’ll have a few meetings in the morning with team members and then a scrum meeting with the different R&D teams based on the products we’re working on. In a scrum meeting, each product team talks about what we did yesterday and what we’ll do today. It’s just a quick informational session about where we are and if we have blockers. I’ll have some coding time and then do new feature analysis in the afternoon.

What changes have you noticed in the HR data integration industry?

The number of Flexspring employees has grown considerably since I’ve been here, and we’re always hiring. Also from the industry standpoint, the number of clients asking for HR data integration and different domain integrations, like banking or insurance integrations, is growing. It's just unbelievable to see the increase in requests for integration and more automation. Our business is growing because we’ve built technology that can be used for any type of API and any type of system. Any application software with an API, we can integrate with – we’ve built the technology for that. From my perspective, with the technology we build, we don't have a limit in the industry.

How do you see your career changing or evolving with Flexspring?

I totally see the next steps to help me move forward and grow with this company because I know where I want to be and I know they will give me the support and guidance to get there.

How would you describe the culture here?

I see Flexspring as a big family. You can ask anybody anything anytime, and someone will be happy to help you. That’s something that makes me love working here. I really feel like I'm in a big family, and they encourage people to grow.

What would you tell a developer about why they should choose Flexspring?

I would say the best things are the challenges and the team. I like our team spirit across the company, not just on my team. We see challenges every day, and we’re a growing company. The mentality here focuses on constantly improving our skills and technology.
